Onlays

What Are Onlays?

A dental onlay, also known as a partial crown, is a custom-made restoration that fits over the cusps (the pointed parts) of a tooth. Onlays are used to repair teeth that have been damaged by decay or trauma, restoring their function and appearance. Onlays can be an alternative to a crown when replacing an old filling, or smaller fractures and cracks.

Onlays can be made from various materials, including gold and ceramic. While both types of onlays offer significant benefits, ceramic onlays are particularly popular due to their superior aesthetic qualities and bonding capabilities, which ensure a secure fit and natural appearance.

Onlays help to strengthen the remaining tooth, which is particularly important for for fractured teeth, or those that have had root canal therapy.

The Onlay Process

1

Initial Consultation

Our dentists will examine your tooth and take X-rays to ensure an onlay is the best option.

2

Tooth Preparation

The decayed or damaged portion of the tooth is removed, and the tooth is cleaned and shaped to fit the onlay.

3

Scan / Impressions

An impression or scan of the prepared tooth and surrounding teeth is taken to create a custom onlay that fits perfectly.

4

Temporary Onlay

A temporary onlay may be placed to protect the tooth while the custom onlay is being fabricated.

5

Fitting the Onlay

Once the custom onlay is ready, it is checked for fit and colour before being permanently bonded to the tooth.

FAQs

Why use Gold Onlays?

Gold onlays are particularly useful where there is not much room in the bite and the material needs to be very thin, as gold is extremely strong and wear resistant. This means they are less likely to wear over time.

What are the advantages of Ceramic Onlays?

Ceramic onlays are tooth-coloured and blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, making them an excellent choice for visible areas. They are bonded to your teeth providing additional strength and support.
