Bridges
What Are Bridges?
Bridges are attached to one or both teeth either side of a space. They can replace small numbers of missing teeth and are fixed into place.
However cases need to be selected carefully as bridges put pressure on the surrounding teeth, as well as in some cases involving removing a lot of natural tooth.
Your dentist will discuss the options carefully with you, and discuss alternatives such as dentures or dental implants.
The Bridge Process
Initial Consultation
Our dentists will examine your tooth and take X-rays and discuss all the options with you.
Tooth Preparation
The tooth is reshaped to make room for the bridge retainers. This may involve removing some of the outer layer of the tooth.
Scan / Impressions
A scan or impressions of the reshaped teeth and surrounding teeth are taken to create a custom bridge that fits perfectly.
Temporary Bridge
A temporary bridge may be placed over the prepared teeth while the final bridge is being made.
Fitting the Bridge
Once the custom bridge is ready, it is checked for fit and colour before being permanently cemented into place.

How long do bridges last?
If cases are selected carefully, and the bridge is looked after well, they can last 10 years or more.
Do bridges look natural?
Bridges can provide a good aesthetic result, but in some cases it can be obvious there is no gap between the teeth as the bridge is joined to other teeth. In these cases an implant may be preferred.
Does a bridge put pressure on my own teeth?
Yes a bridge does add load to your own teeth, therefore it is important to carefully consider all your options, and to look after bridges carefully.
Can bridges be used with implants?
Yes it is possible to place a bridge onto dental implants.
